From 10th to 14th January 2024, the campus will transform into a vibrant hub of talent, art, and festivities, with an expected footfall of 80,000 enthusiasts.
A Journey Through Time: Mardi Gras to Saarang
Since its inception in 1974 as ‘Mardi Gras,’ the festival has evolved, embracing the cultural fabric of South India. In 1996, to pay homage to its Indian roots and the presence of the spotted deer on the campus, the fest was rebranded as ‘Saarang.’ Now, after five glorious decades, Saarang stands as a testament to the creative spirit and rich traditions of Tamil Nadu.
Events and Schedule

Golden Jubilee Celebrations
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, expressed, “For the Golden Jubilee year, we dedicate Saarang to the rich culture and traditions of Tamil Nadu.” Nearly 850 students are tirelessly working to make this edition a grand success.
Cultural Fusion: Saarang Village and ‘Incredible India’
The newly introduced Saarang Village promises a dedicated space showcasing India’s diverse cultures. The initiative ‘Incredible India’ aims to leave an indelible mark of Indian heritage on spectators’ hearts, celebrating the unity in diversity.
From Students, For Students: A Symphony of Talents
Saarang offers a unique platform for rising young artists across various art forms, including freestyle dance, photography, acapella, graphic designing, stand-up comedy, and more. The fest is a melting pot of creativity, with events hosted by cultural clubs covering oratory, fine arts, writing, and the newest addition, the culinary arts club.
Professional Shows and Spotlight Lecture Series
The crowning jewel – Professional Shows – features established and emerging artists, promising a mesmerizing experience. The ‘Spotlight Lecture Series’ welcomes esteemed speakers from various cultural domains, including Mr. Nassar, Mr. Gautham Vasudev Menon, Ms. Rukmini Vijayakumar, Ms. Usha Uthup, and Mr. Manoj Bajpayee.
Urjam: The Social Campaign
Saarang’s commitment extends beyond entertainment with the social campaign ‘Urjam,’ focusing on energy conservation. In collaboration with workshops and panel discussions, ‘Urjam’ aims to create awareness about the judicious use of fuel and electricity.
