An event rightly nominated in the top international music festivals in 2019, Burning man is held in the western United States at Black Rock City. It is a temporary city erected in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada, approximately 160 km north-northeast of Reno.
The festival gets its name from the symbolic ritual of burning of a large wooden effigy (of the “Man”) that traditionally occurs on the Saturday evening of the event.
Here read how to do the Burning Man festival in a shoestring budget.
Black Rock gives us all a chance to heal, to become ourselves.
Larry Harvey
Adding to that, the Burning Man festival is an annual week-long celebration in a temporary metropolis devoted to community and art. It revolves around, as they say, 10 principals:
Radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation, and immediacy.
It was first held in 1986, 33 years ago on Baker Beach in San Francisco with an attendance of 20 people. A small function organized by Larry Harvey and Jerry James, who built the first “Man”, it has since then held every year spanning from the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September (Labor Day). Today, it has an attendance of 70,000 people from across the globe.
Below, take a look at a glimpse from the first Burning Man festival.

Where: Coachella Valley, Colorado Desert, Indio, California
When it comes to music festivals, Coachella is without a doubt, the motherload of all festivals. You can’t possibly curate a list of music festivals without including the one and only Coachella, can you?
And, it’s so because of the versatile mix of the best artists and musicians across genres and globe, coming together for two epic weekends. Its ‘middle-of-nowhere’ desert venue makes it the ultimate place to escape for music lovers. That’s perhaps a significant reason why it draws an insane amount of people every year. And not to forget, Coachella is a favorite amongst celebrities as well.
The colossal history of Coachella Music and Arts Festival dates back to 1993. In addition to that, Coachella’s history is so old that it could quickly fill a book. You must be wondering how did it all begin?
It all began when Pearl Jam’s lead singer Eddie Vedder allegedly became upset at the excessive service charge Ticketmaster charged the concert attendees. So to proscribe all the venues controlled by Ticketmaster, the band decided to perform at the Empire Polo Club grounds in 1993. Music executives Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen noticed how efficacious the Pearl Jam concert was. And that’s how Coachella, the most successful music festival in the United States and all over the world, was born. Each Coachella staged from 2013 to 2015 set new records for festival participation and total revenues.
The ticket prices range from $429 for general admission to almost $1,000 for VIP passes. This year, Coachella 2019, is all set to give all the music and travel junkies, a weekend full of pulsating energy and crazy vibes, again.

The festival has seen the likes of Beyoncé, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Ed Sheeran, Adele, etc.
In addition to the big shot headliners, the festival also pays to provide a platform to the not so famous artists who are brimming with potential. The ‘BBC Introducing’ stage has kick-started the careers of many British artists who are killing it out there today, such as James Bay and Florence and the Machine.
Glastonbury Festival, inspired by the ethos of the hippie, counterculture, and free festival movements, was held intermittently from 1970 until 1981. It has been held every year since then, except for fallow years, taken at five-year intervals. This was done intending to give the local population, land, and organizers a break. In the same way, 2018 was a “fallow year.”

9. WOODSTOCK
(50th Anniversary edition)
When: August 16-8, 2019
Where: Watkins Glen, New York
The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, also known as Woodstock, was the most iconic music festival in human cultural history. As a result, over half a million attended the four-day extravaganza.
Rock music fanatics are aware of it as the single milestone event in the field of music. The inviting and peaceful environment not only highlighted the hippie culture to the mainstream media but also exemplified the accommodating nature of the people
As a late 1960s cultural touchstone and one of the biggest rock festivals of all time, Woodstock has been a part of popular culture in many different ways. As a result, the phrase “the Woodstock generation” became the spring of the common vocabulary.
Woodstock, taking over Max Yasgur’s upstate New York dairy farm in 1969, became one of pop culture’s most definitive moments. Additionally, Oscar-winning documentary Woodstock directed by Michael Wadleigh captured the festival in its full glory. It featured sets from counterculture icons like Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Incredible String band, and Jimi Hendrix’s performance on his discordant rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, the most memorable performance.
This year, finally, Woodstock festival is back with a bang to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Look at the fab lineup. Lang, its co-founder, said that he wants the festival to be “eclectic” and “multi-generational” with “newer bands” performing tributes to original Woodstock artists.
“It’ll be hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival…We’re also looking for unique collaborations, maybe some reunions and a lot of new and up-and-coming talent.”
The Fader
