Now, they’re ready to dazzle the world once more with their debut music video ‘Saath Tere,’ on SuPra marking the beginning of an exhilarating journey with Virgin Music India.

Sukriti and Prakriti Interview

In an exclusive chat with Pooja Kashyap of GrooveNexus, they spill the beans on their label, SuPra, their upcoming projects, including a special collaboration with Arjun Bijlani, and their electrifying stint on MTV Beats Season 4.

Pooja Kashyap: How did you guys start your journey in the music Industry?

Sukriti & Prakriti: This is a very long answer, so I’ll try to keep it brief. Prakriti and I come from a musically inclined family. Our mom was a music teacher in a Delhi school for a long time, teaching students both at school and at home. We also have an older sister who is nine years older and was the first professional singer in our family, starting her career singing for movies. We are all from Delhi originally, but moved to Bombay when we were 10 and our sister was 18.

We’ve witnessed our sister’s entire journey in the music industry, which has inspired us greatly. We’re passionate about singing, and it was during our time in school and college that we realized we could pursue a career in music. Our journey began with various opportunities, including providing voices for Disney movies dubbed in Hindi.

However, it wasn’t until 2015-2016 that we made our debut as playback singers in different movies. We always dreamed of forming a duo and a band together, and while it’s been a long journey, we’ve made progress. We were signed with different labels, released singles, and finally started making music together towards the end of 2019.

Our individual journeys have intertwined, and now, more than ever, we’re united musically. We’ve recently released “SAATH TERE,” marking the beginning of an exciting new phase in our careers. We’re eagerly anticipating everything that lies ahead.

So, basically, Aakriti had a great influence in your career and your life.

Sukriti & Prakriti: Yes, she’s been going on for so many years. It’s because of her that we learn how to be on stage, sing, and interact with an audience. We’ve learned a lot from her, and we continue to learn so much. I believe the journey will be ongoing.

Pooja Kashyap: When discussing music, could you please share your definition of a music artist?

Sukriti & Prakriti: I feel like, again, it’s very subjective, right? But personally, I believe an artist is generally someone who lives in their own world. They could be your friend, partner, classmate, or colleague, but a true artist is always engulfed in their own world. They see the world differently, hear things differently, and are very passionate and sensitive. They can be eccentric as well.

We’ve had the chance to work with many people, interact with them, and even get inspired by our dreams and heartbreaks. Inspiration can come from anywhere, even on the happiest days or in unexpected moments like the washroom. It can come whenever it has to. We never stop creating, and there’s always some song playing in our head.

Pooja Kashyap: How has your music journey been progressing?

Sukriti & Prakriti: I think this year is going to be very, very special. You know, like Sukriti said, we’ve just started something so new. It’s brand new. It’s a whole dream come true moment that we’re experiencing right now, especially with SuPra Go Live. I would like to take a moment to thank all our listeners, fans, and those who have followed us over the years. Truly, having you all be a part of this journey as we branch out as independent artists is incredible. It’s both exhilarating and nerve-wracking because, as we know, the long-term success of music in India still requires love and support from the people in this country.

Today, we’re releasing so many different songs, and I hope everyone finds a favorite from the catalog we’re about to release this year. I also hope that some people find themselves in the songs we put out this year.

And I feel now is the time that independent artists are getting what they deserve. People are becoming more aware of independent art, artists, and labels. Back then, nobody knew about labels or what being independent meant.

Sukriti & Prakriti: It’s so true now. But I feel like true audience and true music listeners, they don’t care where the song is coming from as long as it resonates with them. If you love a song, you’ll never care about where it’s being released from, even today. If you look at playlists, you’ll find many non-commercial songs, but it’s still music; it’s an energy that translates. That’s just bound to happen. So that’s what we’re aiming for. And, you know, I really hope more and more people listen to the song, support it, and we have some surprises lined up. So, super excited.

Watch Here:

Pooja Kashyap: You’ve scored many hit tracks including “Kehndi Haan Kehndi Na,” “Majnu,” “Mafiyaan,” and many more. I would love to ask: How do you react to success?

Sukriti & Prakriti:. Yeah, we feel like success is very subjective. Success can mean different things to different people. Sometimes success for me just means having the liberty of time, having freedom of time. Some days, it could just mean possibly getting validation from people. Some days, it could mean being in a studio and making a song that we’re super excited about. So it’s different things, you know, like sometimes, we write a list of things that we want to achieve and like we can dream, you know. So it keeps changing. But at the core, we feel like if it’s being happy with what we are doing, we feel like that is success, and we want to be genuinely excited, not be told that we have to be a certain way or that we are not. we feel like that is very important to us. So ongoing with this journey, we feel like the most important thing for us is obviously learning a lot along the way because we know that we will have to, and we’re ready for that, but also just enjoying the process and trusting the process. So we feel like that would be success for us too.

Pooja Kashyap: How was SuPra formed, and whose idea was it? Is there any deeper meaning, or did you combine your initials?

Sukriti & Prakriti: Truly, SuPra was formed through the most authentic and honest way, and seeing this would mean everything to our fans because, you know, a lot of people know that throughout our lives, people have not called us Sukriti and Prakriti. Instead, they’ve called us Suku Puku. That’s just, you know, they’d call us with little bit of love. We would like to give credit to all our fans. I think when Instagram was made, Sukriti and I, being twins, used to post content together, do funny things together, and sing together. Even live shows have always been together, but our fan clubs, because Sukriti and Prakriti are such long and difficult names, also, you know, people who wanted to really follow us and make those fan clubs, they could not put both the names together. So they made a short form, SuPra. We were just like that this is a cool name and this is something to have. I feel like, a lot of people who are starting out as of recently come into the industry, with something like their stage names. We never had anything like that. It was just always our names. And I feel like over time, in the last 5 years, now SuPra has become our stage name. People address us as that, so it only made sense to take it forward and make it into a bigger brand. And you know, we don’t know the future right now, but I can tell you that it’s going to be together and it’s going to be a lot of things. It’s amazing to be a duo and just work with my sister and have fun. Having fun is an important part, but yeah.

I was just wondering whether there is any hidden meaning or if it’s just the initial of your name.

Sukriti & Prakriti: It’s just the initial. But I think for most people, who want to relate to us. And you know, come on our shows. A lot of people now, even when they come to us to just meet us, when they meet us anywhere, they just start calling us ‘SuPra’. So I think it only made sense for our label to also be called that, which will have all sorts of content. Of course, music is always going to be there, but there’s also going to be everything else. This is the name, and this is a label, and it’s going to have some really, really exciting things in the coming future. And it’s going to be SuPra.

Pooja Kashyap: The first music video has been released through SuPra in collaboration with Virgin Music India. What do you think this partnership signifies for the two of you and your music career?

Sukriti & Prakriti: I think we find ourselves very fortunate and blessed that at the right time, we met certain people who will contribute to our growth in such a long way. It was very scary in the beginning. But with the love and support, and with that spirit in our music, I feel like with Virgin being in our lives and being our partner in this journey, we’re going to definitely reach a global audience. Virgin Music is renowned all around the world, and I feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface. There is so much opportunity, and I feel like we can do so much more together. And also, I think when you have partners who have so much faith in you, only magic can come from that. It’s so important to partner with people who have blind faith in you, just to encourage and support you through this journey because it is a very scary thing to go independently in today’s time. But we’ve been talking about doing this for years. So I just think that the right thing happens at the right time, and this is the right time. And with the best people, even though it is independent, I feel like it is definitely a team effort that makes an artist. We are nothing without our teams and how much work they put in for us. So it’s a collective effort. It’s a collaboration of ideas, brains, minds, and our creativity, everything put together. So a great team makes dream work, and we’ve got big believers in that.

Pooja Kashyap: You mentioned that the song “Saath Tere” was inspired by your New Year’s holiday experience. Can you recall a cherished memory or holiday experience that this song reminds you of?

Sukriti & Prakriti: Yes, for sure. There’s no story to it. It’s actually a very simple fact. You know, firstly, it’s a vlog-style video, something that we’ve never attempted. I mean, you’ve heard ‘Kandi Haan,’ you’ve seen ‘Majnu,’ you’ve seen ‘Mafiyaan.’ So, you know that SuPra before was like that. Also, we were much younger, right? But also I feel like music has evolved, and we also have evolved. Our compositions, melodies, everything has evolved. And this is truly SuPra 2.0. And for the first time, we have created a song that happens in a very, very organic, pure vibe. It was the best way to start the label. When it came to the music video, we had taken a trip. We were truly excited, two girls on a trip. We were shooting content. We were taking it for our social media. But it only struck us on the third day of the holiday, that what if, you know, we start shooting everything and we don’t have the song right now with us, but what if we shoot everything. If you go back home, we make a song and we make this the first music video ever. Which was exciting because we weren’t acting. We were truly being us. Even in terms of our hair and makeup, there’s nothing. It’s truly us being candid. That is just our most personal music video ever. So, I feel like the listeners and all the fans are really going to connect because if you really look at it, everybody likes taking trips and digging themselves. And I feel like we’ve just compiled that. It’s very organic. It’s very real. And I feel like it’s very personal, which we’ve never really given to our listeners before. So it’s just a piece of our life that we have kind of made into a song. We want to share it with all the people who supported us because, you know, no fancy outfits, no hair and makeup, no expensive cameras. It’s shot on iPhone. It’s very us. There’s no acting and no script. In fact, there’s no song as well, otherwise, there would have been lip-synced. But it’s just like a compilation of just memories. Yeah, that was the idea. I was like, we have to do something real, organic, and pure, and we do this because why not? You know? And we just went ahead and made a vlog. It’s so much easier. I like that, again, because there is independence in doing this. So when we’re starting this independent journey, it only made sense to start like this.

Pooja Kashyap: Can you recall a cherished memory or holiday experience that this song reminds you of?

Sukriti & Prakriti: We don’t take many holidays, but this time we had a week off. So, we were like, ‘Let’s book tickets randomly without planning anything.’ We were just discussing where to go, and we ended up in Austria. We didn’t know much about the place or the region. We were like, ‘Wow, I’ve heard of Vienna. We’ve never been to Vienna; let’s go there.’ And we started from there. We literally took a map, booked a car, and went on a road trip. What we didn’t realize was how long it would take to get from one place to another. There was one whole day when we were just driving and reaching the other place. But it was a lot of fun at different levels, you know? We experienced snowfall. I remember it was so beautiful. We went skiing for the first time, took our first ski lessons. So, a lot of firsts also. We fell multiple times, but I think we could ski now. Next time when we try, we’ll know a little bit. We’re foodies, so we indulged in a lot of delicious food, which is very important to us. We enjoyed it all the time.

Pooja Kashyap: What was your experience working with Arjun Bijlani on “Kehndi Haan Kehndi Na?

Sukriti & Prakriti: He’s amazing. In fact, we just met him two days ago, very recently after such a long time. So it’s crazy that you asked this question, but he truly is one of the most amazing, humble, down-to-earth people with such good energy. He’s just full of life, and we love spending time with him. As for ‘Kehndi Haan Kehndi Naa’, we hadn’t met him before that song. So we literally had our first icebreaker at the airport after landing, where we met for the first time. We were both chock-a-block busy; he was busy too. I remember texting him, ‘Listen, we’re going to meet directly, and we have to shoot the video.’ So we went to explore Armenia, shot one day before, and it was amazing, the best day ever. When you’re with Arjun, you can be sure that you’ll be laughing all the time because he’s really, really, really funny. So it’s easy with people with really good energy; you can always be sure to have a good day. After that video, we knew that we’re going to have a friend forever. So he’s one of those.

I could see the chemistry in the video. It came out really well. Even I danced on that and I always recommend to my friends.

Sukriti & Prakriti: That’s so sweet. Do That. Thank You!

Pooja Kashyap: You’ve been featured on MTV Beats season 4. What are your takeaways from MTV Beats?

Sukriti & Prakriti: We had so much fun. I feel like the entire team at MTV has always been amazing, and it was the first time that we were working with them. So, I think we were hosting something on TV for the first time. The whole concept of that show was centered around love and relationships. We had to solve a lot of problems that people in our age group were facing in their relationships. We interacted with so many people, hosted, played all our favorite songs, and did the countdown on MTV. Additionally, we did some specials and episodics on it. We had a lot of fun. It was like two or three things that we loved the most: music, talking about love, and it was our first time experiencing it.

Fun Segment:

Pooja Kashyap: Who is most likely to be late on the set?

Sukriti: On the set, nobody is usually late because we typically have help from people, but if we don’t, Prakriti is usually the one who arrives late.

Prakriti: I’m just late in general. But I think at work, I am very punctual.

Pooja Kashyap:  Who is most likely to forget the lyrics during a live performance?

Sukriti: That’s me. I don’t know what happens.

Prakriti: She’s so lucky to have me.

Sukriti: I just kind of also make up my own lyrics. So, it’s a bit of both the things.

Pooja Kashyap:  Who is most likely to get emotional while writing or performing a song?

Sukriti: That we both of us a little bit. We’re both a little emotional and can be oversensitive.

Prakriti: We can also be emotional, you know, when finishing a song or releasing a song. I think that’s truly when it feels like a release. So, a lot of emotions also sometimes happen.

Pooja Kashyap:  Who is most likely to be the flirty one?

Prakriti: I think we both don’t have game right now, so only focused on work. We forgot flirting. Comes in goals. So at the moment, not happening.

Pooja Kashyap: Who is most likely to pull a prank on the other during rehearsals?

Sukriti: Prakriti is the prankster.

Prakriti: I can do that.

Sukriti: Not just me, she pulls a lot of pranks on people in general.

Pooja Kashyap: Who is most likely to be the person who would be dancing to a sad Song?

Sukriti: Probably me.

Prakriti: I feel like you’ve done that a few times, but like having said that, we are both very emotional, so if it’s a sad song or a sad movie, you’d would see us cry. It’s very rare that you would see us dance to it.

Pooja Kashyap:  Who most likely to come up with crazy outfit ideas?

Sukriti: She

Prakriti: I am also like usually like Sukriti’s stylist also, sometimes. Like Sukriti likes to spend money and buy the clothes. I like to style it.

Sukriti: I feel like I’m very safe in my own choice.

Now I can see how this Duo is formed.

Prakriti: I am always asking her to be a little more bold and more quirky. Otherwise, she’ll wear black if she had to everyday of her lives.

Pooja Kashyap:  Who’s the drama queen?

Prakriti: I am the drama. I’m the problem.

Sukriti: It’s you.

Prakriti: It’s me

Pooja Kashyap: Who is the Fashionista?

Sukriti:  Both of us. We love experimenting with things, and we’re just like very fashion forward and very enthusiastic about it.

Prakriti: And also the trends, we do take it literally because you know, trends don’t last. So yeah. Till they last, you’ll always see us, you know, following the trends. So, we like to be the fashionistas.

Pooja Kashyap: Who is most likely to steal clothes from others wardrobe?

Sukriti: We are twins so we both do that and we both have a lot of clothes that we want of each other and we’re successful at stealing it also, so yeah.
