UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT THE BEATLES’ PRODUCER SIR GEORGE HENRY MARTIN

About his early life

Martin learned to play the piano with only a few lessons. He began composing music while he was in his teens. Martin was a member of the Fortune-Tellers, his band. He aspired to one day compose movie soundtrack music.

Sir George Martin

Martin went to music school after serving in the Royal Air Force during WWII. After graduation, he moved to work for the BBC in London. He began working for EMI in 1950. Martin went to work as an assistant for Parlophone Records, a small record business. Parlophone mostly recorded classical music and original cast recordings of popular theatrical musicals and dramas.

Initial days with his band

Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager, handed Martin a demo (demonstration record) of his band in 1962. He recognized the young band’s willingness to explore new things and invited them to audition. Martin gave many of their tunes a classical flavor. Martin sensed the strain between the Beatles’ members when the band began to break up in 1969, and he began declining sessions with them.

Martin aided in the development of their musical concepts. He taught the band how to communicate with other musicians about the sounds they intended to create, and he infused classical elements into many of their compositions. Martin became well-known as a result of his work with them. He was allowed to resign from EMI and work as a “producer for hire.” With the help of several other producers, he formed Associated Independent Recording (AIR).

After the band

George Martin continued to work with and for the Beatles and the music they had created together even after they had broken up. For re-issues and compilation discs, he remixed several of their tracks. He produced Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a fantasy film based on the Beatles’ songs that starred the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. He recorded many LPs of his own, featuring classical and symphonic interpretations of their songs.

Martin collaborated with various performers, including Shirley Bassey, Bernard Cribbins, America, Kenny Rogers, the duo EL&P, Dudley Moore, the Little River Band, and the Beatles. All You Need is Ears, a book he published, described his life narrative and explained how many of his most well-known recordings were created.

In 1999, Martin announced his retirement and released the album In My Life, which included a variety of performers playing Beatles tunes. Non-musicians such as Jim Carrey, the comedian, were included on the CD.
