Early Life
Armin van Buuren was born December 25, 1976, in Leiden, Southern Holland. Koudekerk aan den Rijn became his home soon after he was born. He was greatly influenced by his father, an enthusiastic music lover. Thus, Armin grew up listening to all sorts of music. His friends then introduced him to dance music. EDM introduced Armin to a whole new world of enchantment. Soon, he was enamoured with the sound of trance and electronic music and started looking for the music’s roots. His love for French composer Jean-Michel Jarre and Dutch producer Ben Liebrand eventually led him to develop his own musical style. At the age of 14, he had purchased computers and the software required for making music and started creating.
Armin van Buuren studied law at Leiden University after graduating high school. In college, he met a few like-minded classmates, which led him to take a break from pursuing a law degree. As a DJ, Armin organised his first show in 1995 with the help of a local student body. It was a massive success. He made a compilation out of some of his tracks, and the money he earned was used to purchase better equipment and make more music. He began to gain exposure to the movie industry only after he met David Lewis. In order to focus solely on his passion, he dropped out of college.
Music Career
The first of his hits, “Blue Fear,” came out in 1997 on Cyber Records, and in 1999 AM:PM released “Communication” and reached the UK Top 20. A year later he launched the label Armind. Armind’s collaboration with Tiesto produced a major record, “Eternity,” and his long sets of up to five hours drew attention. United Recordings released numerous mix CDs which further fueled his fame.
His DJ Magazine Top 100 ranking was number 5 in 2002, and he started hosting his own weekly show, A State of Trance.
After completing his law degree and setting a world record for longest DJ set, Armin van Buuren released his first non-mix CD, 76, by the end of 2003. It was followed in 2005 by Shivers, and in 2008 by Imagine. He spawned the hits “Going Wrong” and “In and Out of Love” with the latter, which reached number one in the Netherlands and entered the Billboard 200 for the first time. In 2010, Mirage was released which peaked at #3 on the Dutch charts. The Dutch DJ’s highest-charting U.S. release to date is Intense from 2013. He followed it up with Embrace – his sixth studio album.
Armin van Buuren’s yearly State of Trance series continued over the next few years. After releasing the EP Blah Blah Blah in 2018, he followed it up with Trilogy in 2019. In the same year he released Balance, his 7th album. Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart ranked it in the Top 20. Afterwards, he collaborated on a few non-album songs in 2020, including “Leka”, “Punisher”, and “I Need You to Know”. In 2021, A State of Trance celebrated its 1,000th episode with a double-CD mix, and A State of Trance Forever followed later that year. In 2022, more singles were released, including “We Can Dance Again” and “Love We Lost”.
