Selena Gomez sets the record straight: ‘Single Soon’ not about The Weeknd

Selena Gomez has set the record straight regarding her latest song, ‘Single Soon,’ denying any connection to her former relationship with The Weeknd. The song, which explores plotting a breakup strategy, led fans to speculate whether it was referencing her past romance with The Weeknd, among other ex-partners.

However, Gomez, who also had relationships with Justin Bieber and Zayn Malik, affirmed that the song is not about The Weeknd, with whom she dated for 10 months between 2016 and 2017.

‘Single Soon’ lyrics include, “Should I do it on the phone? Should I leave a little note in the pocket of his coat? Maybe I’ll just disappear. I don’t want to see a tear. And the weekend’s almost here.”

Gomez further states in the song: “I know I’m a little high maintenance, but I’m worth a try. Might not give a reason why. We both had a lot of fun; time to find another one. Blame it all on feeling young.”

Responding to fan speculation in Hollywood Life’s article about the song’s connection to The Weeknd, Gomez commented, “Couldn’t be more false.”

Following their split in November 2017, Gomez expressed fond sentiments about The Weeknd and their past relationship in an interview with Billboard.

“The most wonderful aspect of being single?” Gomez remarked. “It’s actually… you know what, though? I take great pride in the authentic friendship that exists [between me and The Weeknd]. I can honestly say I’ve never encountered anything quite like it. We parted ways as best friends, and the experience was about mutual support and genuine concern for each other. That was truly remarkable for me.”

‘Single Soon is a playful anthem’

Gomez took to Instagram to share insights into the song’s meaning, thanking her 428 million fans for their support. In her post, she described ‘Single Soon’ as a “playful anthem about being comfortable in your skin and loving your own company. And it’s also really fun to dance to!”

The song is produced by Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat, with the music video directed by Philip Andelman.

As Gomez continues engaging with her fans and releasing new music, an official release date for her upcoming album, which is tentatively titled SG3, is yet to be announced.
