Sam Smith cancels remaining UK tour dates due to vocal cord injury

Sam Smith, the acclaimed singer who uses they/them pronouns, has made the difficult decision to cancel the last two dates of their U.K. tour to rest their voice. The decision came after experiencing vocal issues during their performance in Manchester, England, where they noticed something was wrong with their voice after just four songs.

In an announcement on Instagram, a spokesperson explained, “Due to a vocal cord injury, Sam must have complete vocal rest. Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice. If they take some rest they will be able to perform again.”

“Due to vocal issues during last night’s Manchester performance, regrettably we will be canceling the rescheduled Birmingham and Glasgow Sam Smith shows”, read an announcement.

It continued, “A spokesperson said ‘doctors have advised due to a vocal cord injury, Sam must have complete vocal rest. Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permeant damage to their voice. If they take some rest they will be able to perform again.”

Sam Smith is heartbroken

Sam Smith expressed their sincere apologies to fans for the cancellation and assured them that refunds would be available for the affected shows. In a heartfelt message, they shared their disappointment and explained the situation, mentioning that they had previously battled a virus and had been feeling fine during sound check. However, during the performance, they noticed something was seriously wrong with their voice and had to cut the show short.

“Dearest Sailors, I don’t know what to say, honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago, and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows”, Sam wrote.

The Grammy-winning artist concluded their message by expressing their heartbreak over not being able to finish the show and conveyed their love and apologies to their devoted fans.

“During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice,” they continued. “I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show, but into the fourth song, I could feel something was wrong. I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear, but it won’t.”

Following Sam’s rendition of their fourth song, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” the artist exited the stage, and the venue was enveloped in darkness. At that moment, the audience received notification that the singer would not be making a return to the stage due to vocal problems.

“I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all,” the Grammy winner concluded their post. “I love you all. I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry x.”
