Naatu Naatu from the superhit film RRR created history as it won the Oscars for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards.
The song was composed by MM Keeravani, with lyrics by Chandrabose and vocals by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava. The film was released in March 2022 and quickly rose to enormous popularity. The SS Rajamouli movie gained international acclaim after it was released on streaming platforms, and ever since then, the song has been adored by audiences worldwide.
At the Golden Globes, Naatu Naatu took home the prize in the same category last month. It was also named Best Song at the Hollywood Reviewers Association and Critics’ Choice Awards.
With a “namaste” to the Oscar crowd and a description of the tune as “the pride of India,” Keeravani accepted the prize musically.
“There was only one wish on my mind. So was Rajamouli’s (RRR director) and my family’s. RRR has to win. And it must put me on the top of the World!” Keeravaani said.
Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, two singers, performed the song live on the Oscars platform while accompanied by a dance group. The performance received a standing ovation.
Bollywood star Deepika Padukone introduced the performance. However, she had to stop at least three times due to the loud applause from the A-list audience.
“It plays during a pivotal scene in ‘RRR,’ a movie about the friendship between real-life Indian revolutionaries — Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. In addition to being sung in Telugu and illustrating the film’s anti-colonial themes, it’s also a total banger,” Deepika Padukone said.
