Missy Elliott, the late George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper have been nominated for the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. On Wednesday, representatives from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame presented the 14 candidates for its Class of 2023.
“This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honours and celebrates,” said John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, in a statement.
“These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps,” Sykes added.
Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Joy Division/New Order, the White Stripes, the late Warren Zevon, Elliott, Lauper, and the late Michael are first-time nominees.
Elliott wrote on her Instagram Stories, “I am so Humbly Grateful to receive this nomination. I am speechless (sic).”
The White Stripes and the rapper Get Ur Freak On both received nominations in their first year of eligibility, indicating that they had at least 25 years since the release of their first singles.
As a fourth-time nominee, Kate Bush, who was nominated in 2018, 2021, and 2022, is again on the ballot. Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, and A Tribe Called Quest are among the other returning nominees.
The public vote has begun online and will continue through April 28. The Class of 2023’s top five musicians will be revealed in May, and the induction ceremony will occur later this year.
