Miley Cyrus has settled a copyright lawsuit stemming from an Instagram photo she posted. According to Billboard, who claimed to have obtained the court papers, the photographer initially claimed that Cyrus reposted an image taken in 2020 without his permission.
Miley Cyrus faced damages of up to $150,000.
Even though Miley is the subject of the photo, she does not automatically own the right to distribute it. Under US law, the photographer owns the rights to the images.
The suit has now been settled a month after paparazzo Robert Barbera filed a complaint against Cyrus for posting one of his photos of herself on Instagram.
In the latest court filing on October 18, the suit was dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning the photographer will not be able to refile the complaint in that court. The settlement terms remain confidential.
Barbera has previously filed copyright claims against Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and Dua Lipa for unlicensed use of his images. Grande and Bieber reached a confidential settlement with the New York-based photographer, while Lipa’s case is still pending in court.
