We caught up with her to discuss the new release and her plans for 2024.
Sabina, congratulations on the release of your new single, “Code Blue”! Could you tell us about the inspiration behind this song? What was the creative process like?
Thank you so much! “Code Blue” was inspired by a personal encounter with someone who both inspired and hurt me. The creative process was quite experimental. My producer and I started in the studio by playing around with a cool chord progression, but things got a bit complicated when I decided to rewrite the entire song last minute. It turned out to be the best decision, and I’m really happy with how it evolved.
“Code Blue” seems deeply personal. Can you share more about the story or emotions that inspired the lyrics?
The song is about wanting to help and heal someone you care about but coming to terms with the fact that it’s futile if they refuse to accept the help. It’s a realization that you can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved.
How do you feel your new work represents your evolution as an artist compared to your earlier songs like “Replace You” and “Tell Me A Lie”?
I’d say I’m constantly evolving as an artist because I love experimenting with new styles and genres in my music. “Replace You” was written six years ago when I was just 15, and I don’t resonate with that sound anymore. “Tell Me A Lie” is definitely closer to where I see myself now; it’s a step in the right direction in discovering my true musical identity and conveying my stories.
What do you hope your listeners take away from this track?
I love when my listeners interpret my music in their own ways. However, I do hope they realize that it’s not their job or obligation to fix or heal someone who’s not ready to heal. Don’t spend too much energy on others, especially if it’s one-sided.
How involved were you in the production process, and what was it like working with your producers on this track?
I was very involved! I work with an amazing producer who understands my vision better than anyone else. I tell him what I want and don’t want, and he works his magic. Big shoutout to Mike for always getting it right!
Can you share any memorable moments or challenges you faced while creating “Code Blue”?
Definitely! When I first started writing “Code Blue,” I had completely different lyrics and melodies, but they carried the same meaning. I wasn’t happy with how simple and straightforward my words sounded, so I collaborated with a talented lyricist, Kate, who helped elevate the song’s narrative to a whole new level.
Is there a specific moment or event in your life that you feel directly influenced “Code Blue”?
Absolutely. It was more of an experience with someone rather than a specific event. I can’t say too much because it involves someone I still see from time to time.
What artists or genres have influenced you in your journey through music so far?
I’m a huge fan of Radiohead, The Neighbourhood, and Cage the Elephant. I also love Melanie Martinez and Paramore. I’m really into alternative rock!
If you could choose one artist to remix or cover “Code Blue,” who would it be and why?
I’d love to hear Melanie Martinez or Billie Eilish cover “Code Blue”—that would be crazy in the best way possible. And if Steve Aoki or DJ Snake remixed it, I’d probably lose my mind!
What can fans expect next? Are there any upcoming projects or songs you’re excited to share?
Fans should expect a lot of new music that I’m sure they’ll relate to. I’m currently working on my next single, and all I can say is… I’m obsessed!
Finally, do you have any messages you would like to leave for your fans?
Follow me on social media to keep up with my music! You’ll love it, I promise.
Thanks, Sabina, for your time! We’re excited to see what’s next for you.
