Lord Huron — the genre-defying project led by Los Angeles-based songwriter and visual artist Ben Schneider — returns with “Bag of Bones,” the latest single and music video from the forthcoming album The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1, due July 18 on Mercury Records.
The single follows a string of acclaimed releases, including “Looking Back,” “Who Laughs Last” (featuring Kristen Stewart), and “Nothing I Need,” which spent five consecutive weeks at #1 on Adult Alternative radio.
A Cosmic Lyrical Journey
The new track is accompanied by a visually arresting video from filmmaker Matt McCreary, whose work Schneider describes as “the perfect fit” for the song’s themes of aimless, graceful wandering through life’s twists and existential turns.
“People die and planets turn / And empires rise and fall and burn… / It just spirals off into outer space,” Schneider sings in the single, evoking the expansive loneliness and wonder of the cosmos.
Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgaard, writing the band’s official bio, remarks:
“The album doesn’t look back as much as before… These songs gaze both toward the ghosts of the past and the vast emptiness of the universe. It’s terrifying—and beautiful.”
About The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1
Lord Huron’s fifth full-length album was written and co-produced by Ben Schneider. Alongside bandmates Tom Renaud, Mark Barry, and Miguel Briseño, the project features collaborations with Kristen Stewart and Kazu Makino (of Blonde Redhead).
The album title references a mysterious jukebox-like machine featured on the cover art, painted by Andrew “Mackie” McIntosh. Schneider explains:
“What if you could choose your fate like selecting a song on a jukebox? What if your finger slipped and you got the B-side instead?”
