Major Lazer to come to an end in 2019

Major Lazer frontman Diplo will call it quits next year, disintegrating the trio.

Diplo and Switch founded Major Lazer in 2008. Switch left in 2011 and was replaced by Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. The music spans numerous genres, mixing reggae with dancehall,  soca, house, reggaeton, and moombahton. Major Lazer has released three albums, namely, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do in 2009, Free the Universe in 2013, and Peace is the Mission in 2015. It has even collaborated with numerous other star performers like Sean Paul, Camila Cabello, Travis Scott, Snoop Dog and many more.

In March 2018, Billboard ranked Major Lazer on number five of dance musicians titled ‘Billboard Dance 100’. They have produced hits like ‘Lean On’ which went on to win them the Billboard Music Awards for Top Dance/Electronic Song in 2016. Similarly, they have also won Electronic Music Awards for Single of the Year in 2017, for their single ‘Cold Water’.

After all these successful tracks which are globally loved, it is hard to believe that Major Lazer is breaking. This news will certainly break hearts worldwide. Major Lazer will be releasing their closing album in 2019. Diplo, in an interview with Complex Magazine, confirmed that the group will be coming to an end. Diplo said,

“a bunch of stuff you haven’t heard like that we made the last ten years. Next year marks our last album, so we got a lot of stuff in between now and then.”

Diplo emphasized that partly the reason for the band’s disbanding is because of how busy he is with other projects. To begin with, he has been exploring distinct projects, converging on his new music with Mark Ronson, Silk City. Additionally, he also has a project with Sia called LSD (the L is for Labrinth and the S is for Sia).

Major Lazer has always been on the edge of afro-beat influence. Their Afrobeats (DJ mix) mixtape released earlier this September. Major Lazer, who celebrates its tenth anniversary as a group this year further promised ‘new music all month’ on Twitter. Their new singles ‘Tied Up’ starring Mr. Eazi, Jake Gosling and Raye, ‘All My Life’ starring Nigerian afro-fusion singer Burna Boy, ‘Loyal’ starring Kranium and Kiss Daniel, and ‘Orkant/Balance Pon It’ including South African artist Babes Wodumo and Taranchyla have all seen the light of release and are doing well globally.
