“Living Life on My Own Terms”: Noor Chahal on Ranjha, Bulleh Shah & the Rockstar of Feelings

From viral YouTube covers during the lockdown to lighting up global stages, Noor Chahal has carved a space of her own in music. Known for her soulful voice, honest storytelling, and seamless blend of tradition with modernity, she’s more than just a singer—she’s an artist who celebrates self-expression, love, and freedom. With chartbusters like Surmedani crossing 127M+ streams and her latest release Ranjha inspired by the timeless words of Bulleh Shah, Noor represents the new wave of Punjabi music that is both rooted and global.

Noor Chahal Interview

Pooja Kashyap: Noor, you’ve taken inspiration from Bulleh Shah for Ranjha. Be honest—do you sometimes feel like he was the original Punjabi rockstar of emotions?
Noor Chahal: Absolutely. Bulleh Shah had this rare gift of expressing the deepest emotions in the simplest, most soul-piercing words. He was truly one of a kind—and in many ways, the original rockstar of feelings. That’s why he remains one of the most revered artists of all time.

Pooja Kashyap: You say Ranjha is about a woman choosing love and freedom. If log kya kahenge were a person, what would you like to say (or sing) to them?
Noor Chahal: I think I would sing a few lines from Ranjha to them:

Duniya De Rang Rang Jaavan
Te Main Changi Kehlaavan
Dil Apne Di Kar Baithan
Te Main Khasma Nu Khaavan

Pooja Kashyap: The song talks about dissolving into love, becoming one with Ranjha. So tell us—when Noor dissolves into music, does she come out as melody, lyrics, or just pure vibe?
Noor Chahal: For me, it’s everything—sometimes it’s a melody, sometimes it’s just a single word that unfolds into something I can only call magic. And it never happens when I want it to—it can happen while I’m driving, or while I’m having chai, like with Ranjha. That spontaneity is what makes music so special to me.

Pooja Kashyap: From lockdown YouTube covers to Coke Arena Dubai—did 2020 Noor ever imagine 2025 Noor would be jet-lagged from concerts instead of online classes?
Noor Chahal: Back in 2020, when I was just uploading YouTube covers, I could’ve never imagined that a few years later I’d be performing my own originals on stages across the globe. It still feels surreal sometimes. I carry a lot of gratitude for the love and support that’s brought me here—it’s what makes the journey so special.

Pooja Kashyap: Surmedani set the internet on fire with 127M+ streams. Does that kind of number motivate you, or do you secretly think, bas hun Netflix pe bhi 127M views le aau?
Noor Chahal: I genuinely love creating—whether it’s through music or acting. Surmedani crossing 127M streams is overwhelming in the best way, and of course it motivates me. And yes, I’d definitely love to see that number next to a Netflix project someday too—it would be a dream to connect with audiences on both fronts.

Pooja Kashyap: Punjabi music is known for dhol, tumbi, and dance floors. With Ranjha, you’ve added poetry and self-discovery. Is this your way of sneaking philosophy into the party playlist?
Noor Chahal: I don’t see music as just beats or instruments—it’s always a blend of emotions, stories, and sounds. Ranjha reflects that for me. It’s simple in its essence, but carries a depth that makes it powerful. If it feels like philosophy sneaking into a party playlist, that’s only because I believe music should make you feel, think, and move—all at once.

Pooja Kashyap: You’ve been a YouTuber, an actor, a playback singer, and now a storyteller with Ranjha. If all these Noors met in a room, which one would boss the others around?
Noor Chahal: I don’t think any of them would try to boss around—I see them all vibing together, each bringing their own energy. It would honestly just be one big celebration of everything I love doing.

Pooja Kashyap: Imagine Bulleh Shah with a Spotify account—do you think he’d add Ranjha to his chill playlist, or would he DM you with poetry suggestions?
Noor Chahal: I’d like to believe and wish he’d add Ranjha to his playlist first—and then maybe DM me with a line or two of poetry that would completely change how I look at my own song. That’s the beauty of Bulleh Shah, his words carry timeless wisdom, and I’d be grateful for even a tiny spark of that guidance.

Pooja Kashyap: You made history with YouTube’s Foundry Class, standing alongside global icons like Dua Lipa. Did that feel like Punjabi music finally RSVP’d to the global party?
Noor Chahal: It honestly felt like a milestone. Punjabi music is growing and growing fast, and it’s now being enjoyed by everyone globally. People across the world are connecting with its energy, its poetry, and its soul. To be part of that wave makes me feel both proud and grateful.

Pooja Kashyap: Finally, if Ranjha had a Tinder bio, what would it say—and what would Noor want her listeners to swipe right on in life?
Noor Chahal: Ranjha’s Tinder bio would probably be something like, “Living life on my own terms.”
And for my listeners, I’d say swipe right on whatever feels like home to you—the kind of happiness that lights up your soul.
