Anubha Bajaj, a rising star in the Indian music scene, has captured hearts with her soul-stirring tracks like Jiya and Lamhey. Known for blending emotional depth with unique musical styles, Anubha is redefining indie pop with every note. In this candid interview with Pooja Kashyap, Anubha shares her musical inspirations, the stories behind her biggest hits, and what fans can expect next in the Anubha-verse.

Interview
Pooja Kashyap: First things first — who broke your heart, Anubha? Should we send them the Spotify link to Jiya or just the tissues?
Anubha Bajaj: Haha! To be extremely honest, the inspiration behind Jiya was purely musical. I really wanted to find that blend between chill pop music and a Rajasthani touch to the lyrics. I thought that would be a great combination and that’s how the record came together.
Pooja Kashyap: If Jiya had to live in a Bollywood movie — which one would it be? And who’s starring as the long-lost lovers?
Anubha Bajaj: Instantly the first movie that comes to my mind would be Tamasha. The long-lost love and spark was clearly very well played by Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor. Although I also think nothing can beat the prettiness of the song Agar Tum Saath Ho, having Jiya in a movie like that would be such an honour.
Pooja Kashyap: What’s one line in Jiya that still hits you like a truck every time you sing it? And… do you cry a little while recording too? Asking for a friend.
Anubha Bajaj: My favourite verse is the Punjabi verse “Takdi main teri rahaan…”, not only because it’s my first time singing Punjabi in a song, but also because I find the melody very emotional. My co-writer Ashwin Adwani totally killed it on this track and he kept encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone throughout the whole writing process. I’m so glad I did. Recording was fun too! I don’t think I cried, I was just excited to hear the final audio.
Pooja Kashyap: You’re called the “Indian Charlie Puth” — is that a compliment, a prophecy, or a collab manifesting in slow motion?
Anubha Bajaj: Hopefully a combination of all 3. It’s definitely something I expected when I started making those videos. I’ve been very vocal about him being my content inspiration. What I didn’t expect though, was how quickly the title would surface on the internet. I’m very grateful towards the entire community.
Pooja Kashyap: From Lamhe to Jiya, you’ve been out here dropping emotional nukes. What’s your secret sauce — heartbreak, coffee, or a late-night voice note moment?
Anubha Bajaj: Late night voice notes are my go-to. It’s always about how ideas drop in my head randomly and I quickly take out my phone to record them. Both Jiya and Lamhey happened this way haha! People think it’s a very serious process of sitting down and spending hours trying to get the first idea to a track, but I think the best ones just come on their own naturally without much overthinking. Also weirdly I’m not a coffee person, it doesn’t suit me.
Pooja Kashyap: Let’s be real — which random, everyday sound is totally becoming your next banger on Anything Can Be Music? (Microwave beeps? Auto horns? Mom yelling “Dinner’s ready”?)
Anubha Bajaj: Lowkey wanna keep it a surprise, but mom yelling and I remix it on a reel would be hilarious. Thanks for the idea.
Pooja Kashyap: You’ve done Spotify charts. You’ve rocked closing ceremonies. What’s next? Singing in space? DJ set at a shaadi? Moonlight concert for puppies?
Anubha Bajaj: Moonlight concert for puppies sounds very cute. Praying to god I dream about that when I go to sleep tonight.
Pooja Kashyap: Be honest: how many voice notes do you send yourself at 3 AM with melody ideas that sound like gibberish the next morning?
Anubha Bajaj: OH! 9 out of 10. But that one idea always has potential and I can sense there’s more to it so I start exploring different sounds for the production.
Pooja Kashyap: When you’re writing emotional tracks like Jiya, how do you snap out of it? Ice cream? Meme scroll? Dancing to your own songs?
Anubha Bajaj: Meme scroll if unfortunately my personal bad habit during work. With the way social media has taken over and how it’s sending people into a spell of doom scroll, I can’t say I’m not a victim of that. It’s very common to hit a temporary creative block, get bored a minute and fall into scrolling. It’s something I’ve worked on a lot to get rid of.
Pooja Kashyap: And finally… drop a spoiler alert! What’s cooking next in the Anubha-verse? A wild genre switch? Dream collab? Or an emo-pop anthem we didn’t know we needed?
Anubha Bajaj: You can definitely expect a genre switch. The next one is wildly different from Jiya and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
