1. Ziro Music Festival – Arunachal Pradesh

One of the oldest towns of Arunachal Pradesh at the elevation of 5538 ft, surrounded by gentle hill slopes and rice fields, Ziro becomes a picture-perfect destination for a music festival. Just envision yourself sitting on green pastures with the cool breeze blowing and listening to electronica. That’s exactly how Ziro feels like.

Founded in 2012 by Bobby Hano and Menwhopause guitarist Anup Kutty, Ziro Music Festival has many great Indie artists namely Steve Shelley, Lee Ranaldo, Menwhopause, Lou Majaw, Shaa’ir n Func, Indus Creed, Mashangva, Guru Rewben, and Peter Cat Recording Co. among others. The list is growing and every time it is grander than before! A perfect music festival for independent artists that blends together the best of musical talents to an audience hungry for original and refreshing music. Held every September, Ziro Festival is a “go-to” destination for the youngsters.

Spread over three days, it is hosted by the Apatani tribe of Ziro. Visitors can stay in their own tents or at tents (from the organizers) near the festival ground at Hapoli. BYOT (buy your own tent excluding the event) ranges from INR 3000 to INR 24000 depending on accommodation and festival access.

2. Hornbill – Nagaland

How to reach: Nearest Airport – (D)* Dimapur (74 km), (D)* Imphal Airport (145 Km), (I)** Guwahati (376 km); Nearest Railway Station – Dimapur; Buses ply from Guwahati, Shillong, Kolkata, and other parts. It is well connected via roads.

Organized by the government of Nagaland, the first Hornbill festival was held in 2000. It is also called the ‘Festival of Festivals’. It revolves around agriculture and participation in this festival is essential for Nagas. They showcase their cultural heritage in the form of music, dance, art, literature, and culinary skills. Naga troupes sing folk songs, perform and play traditional dances and games. It hosts one of India’s largest rock music festivals organized by the Music task force.

The festival is named after the Indian Hornbill, the large forest bird which is displayed in folklore in most of the state’s tribes. The week-long festival unites one and all in Nagaland. There is never a dull moment during the 10 days of merry-making.
