Ascending another set of stairs leads to the rooftop bar, complete with a DJ booth, a larger dance floor, and VIP tables that require prior reservation. Regulars appreciate the strong drinks, fun hookahs, and complimentary water, as well as the servers dressed in fishnets. The energetic crowds groove to R&B, rap, and hip-hop beats. Doormen and security checks are expected, and guests are expected to dress stylishly (no athletic wear or flip flops are allowed).

Elevate brings a powerful boost to the club scene, which is very rare to hear about your night music lover. All three levels of the high-profile club Elevate are organized in such a way as to create a kind of space theater. The extra attention given to this place by its appearance and order is evident when you enter and notice the high lighting and sound system, and design. There are comfortable sofas to sit on, and guests can enjoy drinks and food from a full bar and a delicious kitchen. Although Elevate is known as an influential Afro-Caribbean club, D.J.s also play the latest hip-hop songs between dancehall and afrobeat. Ideal for live entertainment and rating events, Elevate ensures that their enthusiasts are comfortable and entertained at all times.

6. Soundcheck

Soundcheck, located underground at 1420 K St. NW, is a nightclub in Washington DC that’s all about the music. Acquired by Insomniac in 2019, it has become one of the most popular clubs in the city. Renowned DJs like Martin Garrix and Zedd have performed at the club, which boasts a German-imported music system and 4-inch thick soundproof foam in the walls and ceiling. EDM parties featuring house, trance, and more, as well as hip-hop nights, are just a few of the events hosted at Soundcheck. On Avalon Saturdays, LGBTQ Washingtonians take over the dance floor with glowsticks and body paint. The 85-plus lighting fixtures are also a highlight of the club. While the club is 18+ Wednesday through Friday, it’s 21+ on Saturdays.

The managing partner, Antonis Karagounis, designed the venue to mimic the sounds of recording studios, requiring a 4,000-square-foot concrete cement with 4 inches of solid wood and transparent foam on the walls and ceiling. The owner of Soundcheck and Echostage, who brought A-level artists like Tiesto, Calvin Harris, and Lorde to D.C. in 2012, invested about $1 million in Soundcheck. With its vibrant dance floor, strong drinks, and unforgettable music, Soundcheck guarantees an exceptional nightclub experience for its patrons.

7. Decades

Decades, located in the heart of DC, is a bar that pays homage to popular music from various eras, beginning with the 1980s and continuing through to today. With its 15,000 square feet of space, the venue is massive, boasting six different levels, eight large bars, and a rooftop that can be either retracted or fully enclosed. At any given time, there are five DJs on deck who work tirelessly to get the crowd pumped up and moving to the beat, all powered by the top-of-the-line Funktion One sound system. Decades takes club culture to a whole new level, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the rich history of nightlife and music through its vintage-inspired décor, which showcases graffiti, gadgets, gears, and other nostalgic elements. Whether it’s a night of dancing or simply a night out with friends, Decades offers a variety of VIP experiences for those seeking a more exclusive setting.

8. Club 9:30

The Club of 9:30, also known as Nightclub at 9:30, has been a staple of the Washington, DC music scene since 1980. Known for its rotating locations, the current iteration of the club is a prime spot for serious DJ beats, touring acts, and a mix of events that cater to all ages. With mostly general admission shows, guests can rock out on the standing room-only floor or snag one of the few barstools in the balcony. The venue boasts four bars, offering a variety of beer and cocktail options, as well as a coffee bar for those in need of a caffeine boost. 

The 9:30 Club has hosted a variety of legendary musicians like Al Green and Fall Out Boy, as well as up-and-coming artists like Melanie Martinez. The venue’s open floor plan and balcony provide ample space for fans to dance and enjoy the music. In addition to the entertainment, the club also offers a menu featuring vegetarian and vegan-friendly options. 

To avoid sellout situations, it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, especially for popular acts. The club announces most new shows on their website on Thursday mornings. Despite its official title, Nightclub at 9:30, the club is affectionately known as the Club of 9:30 by most people.
