Who is SUGA?  

Suga from BTS, a 30-year-old South Korean rapper, musician, and record producer. He has become a prominent member of the globally acclaimed K-pop group. He started his career as an underground rapper. Began creating songs at a young age, ultimately producing over 60 tracks, prior to joining BTS. 

Suga’s first debut in BTS and his interest in music

Suga’s interest in music began at a young age, and he started composing and writing songs while in high school. He began his music career as an underground rapper under the name Gloss. He eventually joined Big Hit Entertainment, now known as HYBE Corporation, in 2010 as a trainee. 

Suga debuted as a member of BTS in 2013, and the group quickly gained popularity for their unique blend of K-pop, hip-hop, and R&B. Childhood & Early Life 

Min Yoon-gi, also Suga, is a K-Pop rapper, songwriter, and producer, born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea. He is best known as a member of the globally renowned boy band, BTS. Despite coming from a humble background and facing financial struggles, Suga pursued his passion for music. He even attempted suicide in his early life but found support and encouragement from his fellow BTS members. Suga has an elder brother and attended Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School. 

At the age of 12, Suga discovered hip-hop music and was greatly inspired by its unconventional style. He began creating music at the young age of 13 and continued to explore his passion while working a temporary job at a recording studio at the age of 17. Initially, his parents were hesitant about his career choice, but they eventually came to support him. 

Career 

Min Yoon-gi began his career as a rapper under the stage name “Gloss” with the hip-hop group ‘D-Town.’ In 2010, he released the song ‘518-062’ while working with them to commemorate the ‘Gwangju Uprising.’ He also appeared in Jo Kwon’s music video for ‘I’m The One.’ 

In 2013, Yoon-gi debuted as a member of the South Korean boy band ‘Bangtan Sonyeondan,’ also known as ‘BTS,’ which was formed by the entertainment company ‘Big Hit Entertainment.’ For ‘BTS,’ he adopted the stage name “Suga,” derived from “shooting guard,” reflecting his love for basketball and his position as a shooting guard in school. The band debuted with the track ‘No More Dream’ from their first album, ‘2 Cool 4 Skool,’ in June 2013. Yoon-gi has contributed to numerous tracks for ‘BTS.’ 

In 2014, ‘BTS’ released a Japanese album, ‘Wake Up,’ and a South Korean album, ‘Dark and Wild.’ Yoon-gi wrote several hit songs for the group, such as ‘Jump,’ ‘Tomorrow,’ and ‘Like,’ and produced tracks for their successful albums ‘Wings’ and ‘The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1.’ His songs were highly appreciated and played a crucial role in ‘BTS’ achieving enormous success. In 2017, ‘Bangtan Sonyeondan’ became the first K-pop group to win the ‘Top Social Artist’ award at the ‘Billboard Music Awards.’ 

Suga in Personal Life 

Min Yoon-gi, also known as Suga, has openly discussed his struggle with depression and has been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, he has demonstrated his generosity by distributing beef to 39 orphanages on his 25th birthday celebration, with the support of his fan base ‘Army’, as a kind gesture. 

Despite his success, Suga remains humble and grounded, often expressing gratitude to fans and colleagues for their support. His determination to continue growing and evolving as an artist and a person is a testament to his character and the values, he holds dear. 

In addition to his music career, Suga has also been open about his struggles with depression and anxiety, using his platform to raise awareness and destigmatize mental health issues. He has also been involved in various philanthropic efforts, including donating over $80,000 to the Korean Pediatric Cancer Foundation in 2018.
