For more than a quarter of a century, Natalie Imbruglia has been recognized as one of Australia’s most beloved and internationally renowned music celebrities. ‘Torn’ by the Australian-British singer-songwriter and actress achieved worldwide fame and accolades. While its peak position in the UK charts was No.2, it later became the 85th biggest-selling single of all time. Natalie Imbruglia’s albums that got her immense fame are Left of the Middle and White Lilies Island. Natalie Imbruglia’s songs Torn, Big Mistake and Shiver are considered to be some of her most popular ones. Imbruglia supports several humanitarian campaigns around the world. ‘Virgin Foundation’ is a private charitable organisation to which she served as ambassador.

Early Life

Natalie Imbruglia grew up in Berkeley Vale, New South Wales, and then moved to Sydney with her family when she was a child. She is the daughter of Elliot and Maxene Imbruglia. She studied ballet, tap, and Highland dancing as a child and dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue an acting career. Her first acting role was on Neighbours in 1992 after appearing in commercials for Coca-Cola and Twisties. The actress stayed on the show until 1994, when she moved to London to pursue a singing career.


Natalie Imbruglia signed with RCA/BMG in 1996. “Torn” was released by the label in November 1997 and became a sensation in the UK. It reached #2 and sold over a million copies. Its success fueled Imbruglia’s November 1997 full-length debut ‘Left of the Middle’, which reached the top of the charts in Australia and became a hit in the UK and US. Having sold more than 7 million copies internationally, it was the most-selling debut album from an Australian female artist. Natalie Imbruglia’s genre is primarily pop and Left of the Middle won the Best Pop Release award and the Single of the Year award for her, while Torn won the Single of the Year award for Imbruglia. Additionally, “Torn” earned her nominations for Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best New Artist, and International Newcomer at the Brit Awards.

In 1999, Natalie Imbruglia recorded an INXS cover, “Never Tear Us Apart,” with Tom Jones. In 2003, she released her second album, White Lilies Island. In 2004, Imbruglia and BMG parted ways following her appearance in Johnny English. Her debut album, Counting Down the Days, was released in April 2005 by Brightside Recordings. With the album topping the UK Albums Chart and being certified gold, its first single, “Shiver,” was the artist’s biggest hit since “Torn”.

Glorious: The Singles 97-07, arrived in 2007 and debuted at #5. After splitting with Brightside, Imbruglia signed with Island in October 2009 for ‘Come to Life’. Imbruglia appeared as a guest judge on both the Australian and the UK versions of The X Factor in 2010. The actress then appeared in a couple of movies including Underdogs in 2013 and Among Ravens in 2014. Moreover, she took part in a UK performance of the play – Things We Do for Love.

Male, her first album in six years, was released in July 2015, marking Imbruglia’s return to music. Imbruglia supported Male with a tour in both 2017 and 2018, and the album reached number 20 in the UK and 25 in Australia. She appeared in the shows First Contact and Who Do You Think You Are? during this period and gave birth to a son in 2019. After signing with BMG that year, Natalie Imbruglia released Firebird in 2021
