Originally from the Quakers Hill suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Michael Gordon Clifford was born on 20 November 1995. His parents, Karen and Daryl Clifford, owned and operated a computer business, and he is the only child. During his third grade year at Norwest Primary School, Clifford became friends with his future bandmate, Calum Hood. While attending Norwest Christian College, Clifford met Luke Hemmings, his bandmate in Year 7 of high school. Before becoming friends with Hemmings and forming the band, he initially “hated” him for “a solid year.”. Clifford and Ashton Irwin met during year nine through mutual friends. Because of his irregular attendance, he left high school while in Year 10 and completed a course at TAFE instead.
When he was eight years old, Michael Clifford began playing guitar using the video game Guitar Hero. When Clifford was a child, he took singing and piano lessons, but he eventually quit due to his dislike for them. Clifford began taking guitar lessons at 11 years old after receiving an acoustic guitar from his parents. Clifford also played the guitar in his school’s church band when he was in high school.
A YouTube channel for Hemmings was created in 2011 where Clifford, Hood, and Hemmings posted cover versions of other artists’ songs. Ashton Irwin, a mutual friend of the trio, eventually joined the band, completing the current line-up of 5 Seconds of Summer. In the months following their covers, the band began receiving attention from record labels and eventually signed with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Since then, Clifford and the band have released 4 albums, all of which have been successful worldwide: 5 Seconds of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018), and Calm (2020).
Clifford revealed the Michael Clifford Signature Melody Maker guitar at the NAMM Show in January 2019. Clifford based his guitar design on his very first guitar, Joan Jett’s Melody Maker, which he purchased in May 2019. According to him, he created his Melody Maker to “pay homage to the Joan Jett Melody Maker,” in the hope that it could “inspire” someone in the same way that Jett inspired him. He is the youngest guitarist to ever have a guitar made in his name.
Clifford announced a partnership with Nightfood Ice Cream in June 2019 to create a new custom chocolate flavour.
Clifford has also shown interest in gaming, apart from being in 5SOS. He has over 150,000 followers on his Twitch account, where he streams game sessions live. On January 20 2020, Clifford held a live Twitch event to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross in the wake of the Australian Bushfires.
