The key moments that have shaped Jennie Kim Blackpink fame into the remarkable artist she is.

Early Life

Jennie Kim was born on January 16, 1996, in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Being the only child, she attended Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul before moving to New Zealand where she had a life-changing experience. When she was eight, she visited Australia and New Zealand with her family. Moreover, after expressing her fondness for New Zealand, she was sent to study at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland and lived with a homestay family.

Jennie’s experience learning a new language was documented on MBC’s English, Must Change to Survive in 2006. During her teenage years, she dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. After finishing intermediate, she enrolled at ACG Parnell College.

It was in New Zealand where Jennie first discovered K-pop and developed an interest in YG Entertainment’s music. However, her mother planned to move her to Florida to continue her studies to become a lawyer or teacher when she turned 14. Jennie wasn’t thrilled with the idea, and instead, she moved back to South Korea in 2010 to study at Cheongdam Middle School. Her family supported her decision, and that same year, Jennie auditioned for YG Entertainment with Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” and was accepted as a trainee.

Career

Jennie began her career as a trainee under YG Entertainment in 2010. And spent six years honing her skills before she was finally announced as a member of BLACKPINK in 2016. She quickly became known for her powerful rapping and charismatic stage presence. And helped to establish BLACKPINK as one of the most popular and successful K-pop groups of all time.

Since BLACKPINK’s debut, Jennie has become one of the most recognizable and beloved K-pop stars in the world. She has released numerous hit singles and albums with BLACKPINK, including “Whistle,” “Boombayah,” “Playing With Fire,” and “Kill This Love.” She has also collaborated with other K-pop artists and released solo music. Including her debut single “SOLO” in 2018, which was a massive hit both in South Korea and internationally.

Jennie’s shyness and hidden talent as a rapper

Although Jennie struggled with introducing herself and was hesitant to take initiative due to her shyness, the company saw potential in her as a rapper since most of the songs she covered included raps, and she was the only trainee fluent in English and Korean at the time. She also knows basic Japanese and has learned French.

Jennie’s interest in music

Jennie was interested in music from a young age and trained in singing and dancing as a student. She later joined YG Entertainment as a trainee and trained for several years before making her debut as a member of BLACKPINK in August 2016.

Influences and Musical Style

Jennie’s rap journey began with her studying the work of artists she admired and respected, including Lauryn Hill and TLC. However, she cited Rihanna as her main musical influence and role model. During the production of Blackpink’s The Album, Jennie expanded her music taste and listened to artists such as Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Harry Hudson, H.E.R., and Kacey Musgraves.

Jennie’s talent for singing, rapping, and writing lyrics is honed by vocal coach Shin Yoo-mi, who worked with Blackpink for six years leading up to their debut. In an interview, Shin described Jennie as a multi-talented artist who excelled in various areas of music.

Jennie’s fan following and most successful songs

As a member of BLACKPINK, Jennie quickly gained a large following due to her unique vocal style and rap skills. The group has become one of the most successful K-pop acts of all time, with hit songs such as “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” “Kill This Love,” and “How You Like That”.
