Sia

Who is Sia?

Singer-songwriter, director, and record producer Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, aka Sia, hails from Australia and has amassed an impressive career spanning over two decades. Sia’s Cheap Thrills reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and her album 1000 Forms of Fear debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200. She has worked with a lot of major names in the music industry and is responsible for creating soundtracks to hit films and TV shows. Sia’s music is renowned worldwide and has earned her many accolades including nominations for Grammy and The Golden Globe Awards in addition to ARIA Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. Sia’s songs that are quite famous include Taken For Granted, The Girl You Lost to Cocaine and Titanium.

Childhood

As a child, Sia was surrounded by art and music, with both parents being musicians. Among her early influences were Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Sting. At the age of 17, Sia became aware of her talent for singing in Italy. When she sang “Lean On Me” in a karaoke bar, the crowd sang along.

Sia’s Music Career

Her career began as a vocalist with the Adelaide acid jazz band Crisp in the mid-90s. After Crisp broke up in 1997, Sia put out her first album, OnlySee. As a step toward advancing her music career as well as staying with her boyfriend Dan Pontifex, Sia thought of moving to London. But Pontifex got involved in a fatal car collision. Devastated, Sia eventually moved to London and began performing background vocals for British jazz band ‘Jamiroquai’ and English musical duo ‘Zero 7’.

In the meantime, she announced the release of her debut single ‘Taken for Granted’ with Sony Music, as well as her 2nd album ‘Healing Is Difficult’. She left Sony after being unsatisfied with the promotion they did of her previous album. Her 3rd album, ‘Colour the Small One’, was released on January 19, 2004, but it was not a major success. ‘Some People Have Real Problems’, her 4th album, came out in 2008, with around 20,000 units sold in the first week. She achieved her first chart position at #26 on the US Billboard 200 with this album. iTunes named it the Top Pop Album of 2008. In 2010, she released “We Are Born”. This was her 5th album which debuted at #2 on the Australian Albums Chart and reached #37 on the US Billboard 200.

Sia became increasingly overwhelmed by all the glitz and glamour, and started wearing masks and refusing to do promotions. She also became addicted to alcohol and drugs and even considered suicide. At this time, Jonathan Daniel, her manager, recommended she start writing songs for other artists. With this new chapter in her life, she took a break from recording and became a songwriter instead. She has successfully collaborated as a songwriter with David Guetta on Titanium (2011) and Flo Rida on Wild Ones (2011), and co-written Diamonds (2012) for Rihanna.

In 2014, she released her 6th album ‘1000 Forms of Fear’, which marked her comeback as a recording artist. It was debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA, further rocketing her to fame and cementing her position as one of the best Australian pop music artists. She released her 7th album ‘This Is Acting’ on January 29, 2016, which not only reached number one in Australia, but did well on the US Billboard 200 and was nominated for the ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ a Grammy Awards. The singer has also dabbled in acting. Sia’s movies include ‘Annie’ (2014) and TV shows include ‘Transparent’ (2015) and ‘Beat Bugs’ (2016).
