Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. is an American record producer, composer, jazz trumpeter, Film & TV producer and humanitarian. He is 89 years old and has earned numerous awards for his achievements over the course of his career, which has lasted more than six decades. In addition to writing and arranging music for many movies and television scores, as well as artists like Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra, he is the most Grammy-nominated artist in history, with 80 nominations and 28 wins. As a philanthropist and humanitarian, Quincy Jones has contributed to many charities along with founding the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation.
Early Life
Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. was born on 14 March 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to Sarah Frances and Quincy Jones, Sr. Jones’ parents divorced shortly after the birth of his younger brother, and their father, a carpenter, raised the boys with his new wife. They moved to Seattle, Washington, when Jones was ten. There at school, he started learning how to play the trumpet. After three years, he got acquainted with Ray Charles, who was 15 at that time. Together, they started a band playing at weddings and local clubs and pretty soon, Jones began creating music for the band.
Career
In 1951, Jones got a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Boston, but left his studies midway to join a touring band. From there, his career as a musician began. He then moved to New York City and began working freelance.
During the 1950s, Jones composed and arranged for the Barclay label in Paris while he worked as a producer and arranger. He also played with Dizzy Gillespie’s band on tour.
When he returned to the U.S. in 1961, Jones was hired as an A&R director by Mercury Records and they named him VP in 1964. The 1960s were marked by Jones recording jazz albums, arranging albums for a number of singers (such as Frank Sinatra, Billy Eckstine and Peggy Lee), as well as contributing music to several films, such as ‘In Cold Blood’ and ‘The Pawnbroker’. Then followed his stint at the A&M label (1969 – 1981) after which Jones moved away from jazz and toward pop music. He was now one of the most celebrated producers in the world and his success allowed him to create his own record label, Qwest, in 1980. In his long career, Jones collaborated with many leading figures in all areas of popular music.
Among Jones’s most well-known works, you will find Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, the star-studded charity song performance “We Are the World”, and films and TV shows like ‘The Color Purple’ and ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’.
Jones published his autobiography in 2001. Additionally, his life and career were documented in Quincy (2018), which was directed by Quincy Jones’ daughter, Rashida Jones.
