Who is Berry Gordy?

Born on November 28 1929, Berry Gordy, professionally known as Berry Gordy Jr, is a retired American record executive, songwriter, television producer, record producer and film producer. Besides, he is also best known for African American business as a founder of the Motown record label and its subsidiaries. He was also known for carefully directing and presenting the public image, manner, dress and choreography of his acts.

Berry Gordy’s early life

Berry Gordy was the seventh of 8 children in the middle-class family of Berry Gordy II. Berry very much liked dancing and music but his greatest interest was in boxing. And to become a professional boxer, Gordy dropped out of Northeastern High School in the eleventh grade. When Berry Gordy age was 7, he was interested in songwriting.
Until 1950, Berry Gordy jr boxed professionally and then was drafted by the United States Army in 1951 in the Korean War for service. He later became a chaplain’s assistant and his tour was completed in 1953. Soon after he obtained a GED (equal to a high school diploma).

In 1953, he got married to 19-year-old Thelma Louise Coleman. He later developed his interest in music and started writing songs. His interest took a twist when he started writing songs for Wilson and his siblings. Today Berry Gordy’s sons are also successful just like his father.

Berry Gordy got married and divorced three times. The first Berry Gordy spouse was Thelma Coleman, then Raynoma Mayberry Liles and lastly Berry Gordy’s wife Diana Ross.
Berry Gordy’s children are eight both son and daughter. Berry Gordy’s grandchildren are also very well known along which one is also known by his stage name Redfoo and is a member of the LMFAO and professionally known as SkyBlu. Berry Gordy iv is the father of Skylar Austen Gordy.

From 1957 to 1959, Berry Gordy produced tracks and albums for many many artists. In 1959, he launched Tamla Records and an R&B label. Throughout his years of success, later in 1972, Gordy moved to Atlantis where he produced a number of films including Berry Gordy the last dragon.
Berry Gordy has also contributed to creating a trailblazing new sound in American music and also helped build Motown as a record producer and songwriter. No doubt, his sound helped shape our Nation’s story.
Besides, he also deducted his time from other projects such as publishing an autobiography and developing a Broadway musical about Motown. In 1988, he sold his stake in Motown to MCA Records and also his interest in the Motown song, containing a catalogue of 15,000 songs. Berry Gordy’s net worth is $400 million.

Berry Gordy’s Achievements

In 1988, Berry Gordy was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame, followed by the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2013, he received the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Pioneer Award.
In 2016, Gordy received the National Medal of Arts. Later in 2021, Berry was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors. Soon after in 2022, he was introduced to the Black Music and Entertainment Walk of Fame. As he made sure Motown’s releases should impress listeners, his hard work paid off and Berry Gordy of Motown was successful in no time.
