Who is DJ Paroma?
DJ Paroma Chatterjee is one of the top female DJs in India. She has performed in countless nightclubs and private functions, showcasing her talent and love for music. Several major music labels have commissioned her to remix Bollywood tracks including Sony Music, Zee Music, T-Series, and many others. She represents brands such as V-Moda and UDG Gear. Her music videos have been uploaded to her social media accounts, too. DJ Paroma’s amazing work has earned her a great deal of fame in India and abroad.
Early Life
DJ Paroma’s father was a compulsive alcoholic, so there were rarely any peaceful moments in the Chatterjee household. Due to their father’s behaviour, she along with her mother, and brother would live lives of constant worry and anxiety. It even affected her academic performance. Even though she managed to support herself until the 12th grade, she felt a pressing need to secure a financial foothold to support her parents. Without thinking about it too much, she enrolled in a hospitality and aviation diploma program. Within a couple of months, her first job was lined up with an airline. She found the first couple of months exciting, but it wasn’t something she could see herself doing forever. In about 5 years, she was done and recalls sticking around for that long only because of the sense of security her salary provided.
Trying to find her calling, she ended up in retail, working as a supplier of denim for a while, but only for a few months, as she lost interest. A stint in client service followed, which had a similar ending. She was not suited to flying on irregular schedules, working at a desk, or working fixed hours. But she couldn’t afford to make a mistake again since she had already tried out three different fields.
Journey Into Music
After some self-reflection and soul-searching this time around, DJ Paroma finally found the music that lies ‘within’. Having grown up with it, it was something she was always drawn to. Her early years in life were filled with parties, so she had thought of becoming a DJ. Under Bob Omulo, who she says was an amazing mentor, she took a four-month intensive course in Mumbai. A four-star hotel in her neighbourhood hired her as an assistant DJ a month after finishing the course.
She wasn’t able to earn too well there as they didn’t have a lot of regular clients, but she learned a lot. Her access to their equipment permitted her to record some live sets, which she uploaded to her social media accounts. DJ Paroma’s songs were quite appreciated and her first freelancing gig came on Christmas Eve, eight months into her new job, in Chennai. Since then, her career has taken off.
DJ Paroma was spotted by Sony due to the persona she had created on social media as a prospect for IPL Extraaa Innings in 2014. She acted as their official studio disc jockey for about 45 days. She was also invited to be a jury member, by Wajid of the Sajid-Wajid duo, and Eric Pillai, at Zee’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Lil Champs in 2016 and 2017, respectively. DJ Paroma is also one of the brand ambassadors for V-Moda and UDG Gear in India in addition to having done many official remixes for large music labels including Sony, T-Series, and Zee music. Finally, she embarked on a 12-city US tour in March 2012, clearly cementing her position as a world-renowned DJ.
