Who is DJ Anish Sood?

A prolific artist who broke through the Indian dance music scene, DJ Anish Sood is one of the most famous DJs in India, playing over 90 shows a year across clubs and main stages at major festivals and stages across the country. He effortlessly blends house, electro, and techno in his originals and live sets, and his unique grasp of the crowd and their moods means that he is equally at home playing arenas as he is in intimate clubs. The EDM scene is highly competitive, but he stands out with an unparalleled stage presence and nearly a decade of experience.

Early Life

Born and raised in Goa, India, Anish Sood did his schooling at Vasco da Gama, Goa. A graduate of Goa Engineering College, Anish has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. At the age of nine, he began collecting cassettes and CDs from his father and uncle, who play guitar. Anish was first exposed to EDM through Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance podcast in high school, and he began DJing for college parties at 15 years old.

Music Career

A local club residency led Anish to book and perform with artists from all over the country. Submerge, a promoter based in Mumbai, booked him for shows all over the country from there. Anish and his childhood friend Rishabh Joshi won a slot at Sunburn Festival in 2010 for their remix of Nadia Ali’s Love Story. Musical Madness, the imprint of Trance legend Marcel Woods, released his debut international single in 2011.
In March 2012, during David Guetta’s India tour, DJ Anish Sood performed as direct support. He was soon catapulted to the forefront of India’s electronic scene after his performance was well received. Following this, he accompanied David Guetta on all his shows in India. Anish’s first EP was released in April 2012 on 925 Music, the label of Dutch artist Miss Nine, featuring Ramona Arena. Afterwards, he released an EP with Ramona called “Hello World” and a single with Zoe Klinck called “We Won’t Stay”. A six-city tour with Ramona Arena was announced by Anish in August 2013. Anish won the MyFav Best House DJ award in April 2014 and MyFav DJ Of The Year award in 2015 as well. Sunburn On Air is a weekly podcast he launched with Sunburn Festival in May 2014. Afrojack, Hardwell, and MAKJ are some of the artists who have contributed guest mixes to the podcast.
The track ‘Superfly’ was released by DJ Anish Sood, Anushka Manchanda, and Nanok in April 2015. The song reached #3 on the charts in India. A live streaming event was hosted by Tomorrowland in Mumbai and Mexico in June 2015. Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike played along with Martin Garrix and Armin Van Buuren. The opening set was provided by Anish Sood. As part of “The World’s Biggest Guestlist” concert in Mumbai on 13 December 2015, Anish performed with Hardwell.
The National Centre for the Performing Arts (India) invited Anish to perform on 28 August 2016. In November 2016, Anish performed at the inaugural Electric Daisy Carnival in New Delhi. The remix of Autograf’s Metaphysical, which he dropped in 2016 has garnered over 700,000 plays on Spotify and has been licensed for use in the OST of Ubisoft video game Steep, was one of his most successful releases to date.
“Don’t Stop”, a track featuring Charlie Sputnik, was the first single from Anish’s new label, “Class Action”. Music Week Club Charts placed the track at #6. It received widespread media attention. On 24 November, Anish released his single “Starry Night”, a collaboration with Zach Sorgen and Kelechi. In New York, he won the award for Best Electronica/Dance Single, a first for an Indian. Jonita Gandhi sang the lead vocals on Anish’s “Castles” single, released in February 2018. “Running Back To You” and “Say My Name” were Anish Sood’s songs released in 2020. A virtual concert called retroFuture was held by Anish Sood, Ritviz, and Nucleya on 18 July 2020. Anish renamed his project Anyasa to convey the idea of spontaneity and ease in Sanskrit in July 2021. Anjunadeep signed him as the first Indian to its label. He was included on DJ Mag’s list of “12 emerging artists to watch” in October 2021.
